Patient Leadership In Research Program
PLIR connects lived experience with sleep and circadian research. Join the program as a patient or caregiver, or find a trained collaborator for your research project.
Why this program exists
At WSCN, we are committed to patient-first research: inquiry that honors lived expertise, invites patient voices at every stage, and produces actionable, inclusive, transformative knowledge.
We know that research is stronger when the people affected by a condition help shape it. Too often, patients and caregivers are consulted late, asked only to react to decisions already made or treated as research subjects rather than genuine partners. This can lead to studies that overlook practical barriers, measure outcomes that matter less to people, or produce findings that are difficult to use in everyday care.
The Patient Leadership in Research program helps change this in two ways: by training people with lived experience to collaborate confidently and constructively with research teams, and by connecting research projects to our trained collaborators.

Researchers
- Who we help: Researchers seeking patient or caregiver collaboration in sleep and circadian health projects.
- What we help with: Connection with trained patient-collaborators.
- Location: Across the US according to availability in-person and/or virtual.

- Availability: The PLIR program is open for requests.
What the PLIR program involves
PLIR participants join live online seminars and learn with facilitators, guest contributors and peers. Sessions use discussion, visual roadmaps, case studies and role play to make research concepts understood. Participants learn how to contribute their expertise, ask constructive questions, identify tokenistic engagement and understand the responsibilities shared by collaborators and research teams.
You can expect:
12 live online sessions of approximately 90 minutes
Interactive discussion, case studies and role-play
Pre-reading or short preparation activities ~1hr per week
Accessible course materials and glossary
Facilitator and technical support during the course
Opportunities to learn from other patients, caregivers and researchers
A final assessment and certificate of completion
An optional route to remain connected with WSCN and hear about suitable research opportunities

English reading and writing skills
Researcher Requirements
Researchers must provide information about their project and how patient-collaborators will be involved. WSCN reviews the request for program fit before considering introductions, and may request additional information. When WSCN identifies a good fit, it shares the opportunity with PLIR graduates who may opt in to participate in the project.
When submitting a request for patient collaborators on a project please ensure the following is included:
Completed request form
Outline of research project, timeline, stage, methods, and funding
Clear description of how you will involve collaborators in your research
Clear compensation and payment terms for collaborators
Accessibility, accommodations and support options
Contact point for the project

FAQs
When is the next training?
WSCN is preparing the program for a 2027 cohort. Join the interest list to receive updates and application information. Joining the list does not reserve a place or guarantee acceptance.
What is PLIR?
The Patient Leadership in Research program is a live, 12-week learning experience that prepares patients and caregivers to contribute as informed research collaborators in sleep and circadian health.
How much does it cost?
PLIR is free to course participants and researchers alike. There are no costs involved.
Am I applying to take part in a research study?
No. PLIR trains people to collaborate with research teams. It does not enroll participants as subjects in a clinical study.
How do I know if I’m eligible?
The program is intended for adults with lived experience of a sleep or circadian disorder and caregivers who want to contribute to research. Final age, geographic, technology and attendance requirements for the 2027 cohort will be published before applications open.
Do I need research experience or an academic background?
No prior academic or professional research experience is required.
I’m a researcher. When should I involve a patient or caregiver collaborator?
As early as possible—ideally while priorities, questions, methods, outcomes and engagement plans can still change. A request submitted after key decisions are fixed may not meet PLIR’s standard for meaningful partnership.
Who can I contact about the program?
You can contact our friendly WSCN team at info@sleephealth.org
